FT: Talisker & Four want-to-be Single Malts

By Miguel in Tasting , Cardhu , Talisker

Muahahahah! Talisker and four jokes, I mean whiskies… This tasting doesn’t look interesting at all. In fact the best thing that Diageo could have done with Cardhu would have been close it after all the Pure Malt issue… at least their stock would be more valuable now. And nobody drinking Johnnie Walker would notice the change anyway…

This one looks like take from a whisky show or something like that… anyway… who cares? Let’s taste them.

Talisker Port Ruighe, Jura 1999 XU, Arran Eagle and Cutty Storm

By Miguel in Tasting , Arran , Cutty Sark , Isle of Jura , Talisker

A few weeks after tasting Talisker Storm I knew that Talisker was releasing another bottling, this time finished in Port casks: Talisker Port Ruighe.

talisker port rhugie

You can imagine how I felt!. I am not what you would call a fan of Talisker but I really enjoy the peat and pepper character of its whiskies and I have been in love with it since I tasted some of Talisker oldest bottles. I tried by all the means to get a sample from the distillery but…

no

I have had to wait for the guys of Master of Malt to released it in their drink by the dram section ( God bless them! ). So just to complete the tasting I added other whiskies that I were really interested in tasting: A Jura 1999 Bourbon XU, a now discontinued Arran The Eagle and the new Cutty Storm.

I have no idea how each of them are, but the Jura that says heavily peated… so let’s begin with the blended whisky.

Talisker Storm Review

By Miguel in Tasting , Talisker

Talisker is a single malt whisky produced at the Isle of Skye on the North of Scotland. Talisker has really worked hard to have his whisky related to the maritime tradition of Skye habitants and this whisky is just an step further.

IMG_8059

Talisker Storm was introduced in the range at beginnings of 2013 as a “more Talisker” dram. In contrast with their introductory Talisker 10 years old, Storm has no age statement. Really I care very little about age statements but the problem ( the big problem ) with all the round of NAS whiskies we are seeing lately is that although first batches of most of them are reasonably good the producers may be tempted ( by the dark side ) to introduce younger and younger whiskies into the mix so they can reply faster to demand.

I am not stating on the other hand that older means better as good cask control and ageing is absolutely a must if you don’t want to end with an overwoody whisky ( Chivas 12 years old anyone?! )

Anyway… the whisky

Tasting Talisker & Craigellachie Double Barrel

By Miguel in Tasting , Talisker , Craigellachie

“The Talisker here is too young and overwhelming on the blend. I haven't enjoyed this one”

82
Talisker& Craigellachie - Double Barrel (Douglas Laing)
A "Double Barrel" release from Douglas Laing, that blends a pair of single cask malts (in this case a peppery Talisker with a malty Craigellachie) together into decent blended malt whisky.

This dram has a white wine-like color.

Nose (83): more than average. honey, floral, pepper.

Palate (82): oily. honey, floral, grass, citrus.

Finish (81): average. honey, floral, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Talisker& Craigellachie - Double Barrel (Douglas Laing) with 82 points over 100.

Tasting Talisker 35 years old Diageo Special Release 2012

By Miguel in Tasting , Talisker

“Extremely good Talisker. The oldest ever released by the distillery and a very different proposal of the Talisker 30 years old. If it wasn't so stupidly expensive I would buy it”

92
Talisker 35 Year Old - 2012 Release
A whopping 16th entry for Talisker in the annual Diageo Special Releases, this time the oldest bottling offered by the distillery so far - a 35 year old whisky, distilled in 1977 and matured in a mixture of refill American and European oak casks.
TODO: Check if strength is 54.6% or 54%

This dram has a fino-like color.

Nose (92): more than average. peat, honey, pepper, salt, floral, candies.

Palate (93): powerful, oily. peat, honey, wood, pepper, vanilla, spices, floral, heather.

Finish (92): longer than average. peat, floral, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Talisker 35 Year Old - 2012 Release with 92 points over 100.

Talisker 1993 Amoroso Finish Distillers Edition Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Talisker

“More subtle and complex than Talisker 10yo and almost as good. I prefer the 10yo whisky because of sincere honeyed peated punch”

89
Talisker 1993 Amoroso Finish - Distillers Edition
Part of the Diageo's Distillers Edition bottlings, this Talisker distilled in 1993 is a single malt finished in Amoroso wine casks. Really nice whisky.

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (89): average. peat, honey, floral, citrus, nuts.

Palate (90): powerful, oily. peat, floral, honey, citrus, wood, pepper.

Finish (89): average. peat, wood, nuts.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Talisker 1993 Amoroso Finish - Distillers Edition with 89 points over 100.

Talisker 57º North Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Talisker

“Slightly more spiced than other Talisker whiskies but it does work exactly as well. Good one”

90
Talisker 57º North
A new distillery-bottled cask strength Talisker, 57' North is deceptively smooth for a whisky at this strength, but still a muscular presence on the palate, with the pepper and chilli Talisker hallmarks very much in evidence.

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (89): more than average. peat, honey, spices, flowers, vanilla.

Palate (90): smooth, powerful, oily. peat, sweet, spices, pepper, wood.

Finish (90): longer than average. peat, spices, wood.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Talisker 57º North with 90 points over 100.
