Amrut Kadhambam Review

By Miguel in Tasting , Amrut

I love Amrut whiskies since I tasted for first time their single malt four years ago. I have managed to get most of the bottles they have released in Europe but I failed to get Kadhambam when it was first released here and I really refuse to pay the extra collectors “tax”… so when I saw it again I was quite happy.

During Whisky Show 2013 I managed to taste it and later I have tasted it blindly. So to be fair I show you both tasting notes ( which I think it is a quite interesting and humbling experience ).

The Show Tasting Note

So this is what I thought of Kadhambam when I knew what I was drinking.

“Quite complex Amrut but the complexity turns it into a delicious malt to sip and enjoy for hours”

90
Amrut Kadhambam

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. honey, fruits, spices, wood, plums, mango, nuts.

Palate (90): powerful, oily. honey, fruits, wood, spices, vanilla, liquorice.

Finish (90): longer than average. honey, fruits, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut Kadhambam with 90 points over 100.

Blind tasting note

“Nice whisky. No clue what it can be... it is strange, confusing, intriguing ”

88
Amrut Kadhambam

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (87): more than average. honey, fresh, citrus, wood, pepper, flowers, cinnamon.

Palate (88): powerful, oily. honey, vanilla, wood, citrus, flowers, spices, pepper, cinnamon.

Finish (88): longer than average. honey, wood, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut Kadhambam with 88 points over 100.

Miguel says…

Well, it is different scores but overall is different styles. I really enjoyed it at The Whisky Show but when mixed blindly with other sherried whiskies I didn’t enjoy this so much. Still, it is a very nice whisky, I would go and try it ( blindly! )

Reviewing Amrut Single Cask Whiskies Bourbon, Sherry and Port

By Miguel in Tasting , Amrut

Just to be fair… I tasted these whiskies three month ago and I have been waiting to write this article until I can secure a bottle of one of them. Most of you know that I love Amrut whiskies but these single casks are really fantastic.

AA-Amrut-Single-Casks1

Since I tasted my first Amrut three years ago each one I have drank has impressed me in one way or another, their peated malt, their cask strength, their strange cask managements. Also I have to say that I love the way the bottles look.

But about the whiskies… i tasted three Amrut single cask… you guessed it… at TWE Whisky Show 2013.

Amrut Intermediate Sherry Matured: Impressive sherried whisky

By Miguel in Tasting , Amrut

When I was visiting London for The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show I tasted this whisky with Surrinder Kumar.

And I tasted it after 40 whiskies, Talisker 35 years old, Carsebridge 45 years old and some of the best Karuizawa I have tasted! Imagine how good it has to be to stand after all that.

“Awesome! Delicious Amrut whisky. Maybe one of the best I have had”

91
Amrut Intermediate Sherry Matured
Amrut Intermediate Sherry Matured is uniquely different from the usual sherry finished or sherry matured whiskies. It is the first “intermediate sherry matured” whisky – with the malt aged in sherry casks between periods maturing in either bourbon or virgin casks at Amrut’s Bangalore distillery.

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (90): more than average. honey, malt, citrus, nuts, vanilla.

Palate (91): powerful, oily. honey, malt, citrus, nuts, cocoa, vanilla.

Finish (91): longer than average. honey, nuts, vanilla.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut Intermediate Sherry Matured with 91 points over 100.

Hurry up! Hurry up Miguel! Ok, first floor has the whisky and food pairings, sure, very interesting. Thank you very much sir.

Going one floor under it. Wooa! Mother of God! So much whiskies and so little time. Only two and a half hours for the show to close. ok! Ok! Don’t panic!.

Amrut Fusion Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Amrut

“Woo! Serious stuff! It is so much better that the last I tried. Scots be scared!”

92
Amrut Fusion
This high-strength Amrut Fusion gets its name from the fact that it uses two barleys: Indian and Scottish - with the latter being peated for good measure.

A really excellent mouthfeel and palate combining oak, smoke, dark fruit, mocha and high-cocoa dark chocolate. Delicious stuff.

This Amrut was the 3rd best whisky in the world in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. Definitively something not to miss!

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (92): strong. honey, peat, fruits, a little nuts, spices, vanilla, raisins, cocoa. Better nose than the standard Amrut. It is more complex and darker, like a Tim Burton film.

Palate (93): smooth, powerful, oily. honey, peat, fruits, nuts, raisins, vanilla, wood, citrus.

Finish (92): longer than average. honey, wood, spices, nuts.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut Fusion with 92 points over 100.

Amrut Indian Single Malt Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Amrut

“Superb Indian whisky with lots of tropical fruit notes on nose and spices on the palate. Love it.”

91
Amrut 46% Single Malt
The new Amrut Indian Single Malt has been beefed up to 46% and we can't wait to try it.

The peated cask-strength stuff is excellent and this should be a significant improvement on the old 40% bottling.

And in fact it is, just a bit less complex than Amrut Fusion this is a great whisky coming from the Himalaya lands.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. honey, fruits, pears, mango, vanilla, citrus, cocoa.

Palate (91): smooth, powerful. honey, smoke, wood, spices, pears, vanilla, licorice.

Finish (90): average. honey, spices, melon, vanilla.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut 46% Single Malt with 91 points over 100.

Amrut Peated Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Recommended , Amrut

“ A lot of peat and a bit of fruits. Interesting combination.”

92
Amrut Peated Single Malt
The new 46% Amruts are a very different proposition to the pleasant but unexciting original release. At the higher strength this 24ppm peated effort fairly fizzes along the tastebuds.

This dram has a white-like color.

Nose (92): inexistent. peat, sweet, citrus, banana, mango, a little sherry. First nosing data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Palate (92): . peat, sweet, peat, citrus, wood, spices, a little raisins. Bouquet data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Finish (92): no finish. peat, wood, banana, citrus. Finish length is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut Peated Single Malt with 92 points over 100.
