Finally I found the time and peace of mind to write my review of the #ArranWhisky tasting that was on June, 30th with Steve Rush from The Whisky Wire and a good amount of fellow whisky lovers.

I really like a lot Arran whiskies so this chance of tasting the new 17 years old was a thing I could’t reject. And well… the other expressions were also quite exciting specially the Miss Black bottle that was specially bottle for Miss Black’s wedding.

Arran 100 Proof

A mini bottle of Arran's 100 proof single malt - bottled at 57% ABV, the British 100 proof.

This dram has a white wine-like color.

Nose (84): more than average. honey, floral, citrus, grass, spices. Very young whisky

Palate (86): powerful, oily. honry, citrus, spices, vanilla, fruits.

Finish (87): average. honey, spices, apples.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Arran 100 Proof with 86 points over 100.

Arran The Amarone Cask Finish

“Very fruity Arran with an almost pink color. The high strength bottling saves an uninteresting whisky...umm... not exactly uninteresting but Amarone cask doesn't get the best of this single malt”

Arran The Amarone Cask Finish
Colour: Burnished Copper Nose: Poached pears and honey followed by toasted almonds and a subtle touch of cranberry. With water a coffee note appears together with chocolate orange and mellow butterscotch. Palate: Dark chocolate, cherry and turkish delights are evident as are stewed fruits and toffee. Muscular notes of dark plum wrestle with bitter-sweet apricots and a hint of cinnamon. Finish: A well-balanced combination of the finesse of The Arran Malt and the restrained fruit and oak from the Amarone casks. Concentrated and elegant this malt delivers on all levels.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (88): more than average. honey, fruits, floral, raisins, pears, wood.

Palate (88): powerful, oily. honey, fruits, wood, pears, apples, vanilla.

Finish (87): average. honey, fruits.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Arran The Amarone Cask Finish with 88 points over 100.

Talisker Port Ruighe, Jura 1999 XU, Arran Eagle and Cutty Storm

A few weeks after tasting Talisker Storm I knew that Talisker was releasing another bottling, this time finished in Port casks: Talisker Port Ruighe.

You can imagine how I felt!. I am not what you would call a fan of Talisker but I really enjoy the peat and pepper character of its whiskies and I have been in love with it since I tasted some of Talisker oldest bottles. I tried by all the means to get a sample from the distillery but…

I have had to wait for the guys of Master of Malt to released it in their drink by the dram section ( God bless them! ). So just to complete the tasting I added other whiskies that I were really interested in tasting: A Jura 1999 Bourbon XU, a now discontinued Arran The Eagle and the new Cutty Storm.

I have no idea how each of them are, but the Jura that says heavily peated… so let’s begin with the blended whisky.

Would you pay £150 for a Glendronach 15 years old?

What the hell! July already?! Well, I was supposed to write about this WTS 2013-03 session almost two months ago, but as the poet says there is no harm on delaying if the whisky is good.

As usual, Whisky Tasting Sessions is a set of six whiskies that Jean Marie Putz chooses himself and tasted blindly by us. Just a number on each sample so you can identify it and most of the times they are not sorted in any proper way. But as always, it is a pleasure to test my senses against them.

This session has a great dram that I really love and it has been really fun to discover what it was. Usually between strange independent bottlings of bizarre distilleries there is a jewel or two, like a 38 years old Bunnahabhain that really surprise you. Such is the case…

Octo-tasting, Peat whisky for the soul

At last, Winter is coming to an end. And what better way of saying goodbye to this strange winter that with a few glasses of peat medicines?

In the quest to taste all the stuff that I have ordered, I have decided for five magnifique drams: Arran, Ardmore and three Bruichladdiches.

Didn’t you said peat? Yeah, and I am going to taste peated whiskies from those distilleries. A quite lovely bottled of Arran Machrie Moor, Ardmore Traditional, Port Charlotte 10 years old and two Octomore: 04.2 Comus and 03.1

You know that a have a little sweet heart that loves peat. I adore peated whiskies but on this tasting I have found a whisky that it is just too peated for me. Much like sucking mud!

Master of Malt Single Cask: Whiskies dram-arathon!

As I was writing you yesterday, whisky fairy knocked my door with a box ( well, two in fact ) full of whisky samples of Master of Malt’s Single Cask Whiskies.

Apart of three very interesting That Boutique-y whiskies, the box had eleven samples of the new bottling, that if you know them are stunning most of times… just thinking of this Bowmore, this Glenturret or … ejem… well… to the point, about these eleven single cask whiskies.

Kids! Don’t do this at home! Eleven drams, one evening. Let’s find the best one.

Arran Caskstrength and Carry On Tasting note

The first ever whisky to be bottled by a blog! This was bottled in May 2011 to mark the 3rd birthday of the renowned Caskstrength.net. Caskstrength.net was founded in early 2008 by two former rival A&R men, who joined forces to share their passion for whisky with the world. Since its inception the blog has grown massively, as the two now regularly travel around the world to write about whisky

This dram has a fino-like color.

Nose (88): more than average. floral, honey, vanilla, lemon, malt, wood.

Palate (90): smooth, oily, powerful. fruitsm floral, candies, vanilla, a littlewood, peaches, pears.

Finish (89): very long. candies, floral, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Arran Caskstrength and Carry On with 89 points over 100.

Caskstrength and Carry on Cask Strength Arran bottling

This is the first time a blog, CaskStrength.net, does a whisky bottling.

An Arran bottled in May 2011 to celebrate the 3rd birthday of Caskstrength.net. It is a single cask cask strength bottle of 13 years old Arran. If it is just a bit near of a Master of Malt bottle I tried some months ago this whisky is a serious bottle to buy.

Their first official whisky “Caskstrength and Carry On” was drawn from a single first fill bourbon cask (number 1554) which was filled in 1998 and bottle in May 2011. There are just 92 bottles from the cask, all of which were bottled undiluted at 49.9%abv.

EDIT: Just ordered one from Master of Malt. They also sell samples, so you should read soon what I think about.
