Octo-tasting, Peat whisky for the soul

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Arran , Bruichladdich , Ardmore

At last, Winter is coming to an end. And what better way of saying goodbye to this strange winter that with a few glasses of peat medicines?

In the quest to taste all the stuff that I have ordered, I have decided for five magnifique drams: Arran, Ardmore and three Bruichladdiches.

Didn’t you said peat? Yeah, and I am going to taste peated whiskies from those distilleries. A quite lovely bottled of Arran Machrie Moor, Ardmore Traditional, Port Charlotte 10 years old and two Octomore: 04.2 Comus and 03.1

You know that a have a little sweet heart that loves peat. I adore peated whiskies but on this tasting I have found a whisky that it is just too peated for me. Much like sucking mud!

Macho-peat tasting: Kilchoman, Caol Ila and Lagavulin

By Miguel in Tasting , Caol Ila , Lagavulin , Kilchoman , Ardmore

In my quest to empty the samples queue, I have chose today some macho peated whiskies and an Ardmore.
Like a champion!

Some Kilchoman, some Lagavulin, one Caol Ila and one Ardmore. What else can a man ask to be happy?! ( Yes, yes, but it isn’t sold in a bottle )

I am really excited with the Ardmore because it is my first from this distillery, and I am a big fan of Kilchoman whiskies… so wild and salvage!.

I wanted to taste the Lagavulin 21yo against some real whiskies to see how it measure against them. On its own I was quite happy with it, although not happy enough to pay £350 for it.

Tasting Compass Box Flaming Heart vs Peat Monster

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Laphroaig , Caol Ila , Compass Box , Tobermory , Ardmore

When visiting London for TWE Whisky Show, I meet Chris Maybin, Comercial director of Compass Box. Chris gave me a sample of the new Compass Box Flaming Heart 4thbatch to taste it at home.

Well, finally I arranged a free evening for tasting it when I saw @WhiskyLassie asking how it compared against Compass Box Peat Monster. Also I have a pending task of tasting the old recipe of Peat Monster with Laphroaig and Ardmore against the new recipe using Caol Ila, Ledaig and Ardmore.

A great tasting was starting to appear before me.

Ardmore 1992 Single Malts of Scotland Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Ardmore

“Overall very dry and floral. Not my kind of whisky.”

87
Ardmore 1992 Single Malts of Scotland
An Ardmore of the 1992 vintage bottled by Single Malts of Scotland.

This dram has a fino-like color.

Nose (88): more than average. citrus, spices, peaches, honey, malt, black pepper.

Palate (86): dry, powerful, oily. floral, spices, liquorice, citrus. A really dry taste, not bad but definitively dry beyond my like-point

Finish (87): longer than average. floral, spices, cinnamon.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Ardmore 1992 Single Malts of Scotland with 87 points over 100.
