The Dalmore 15 years old Review

By Miguel in Tasting , Dalmore

Another dram of Maverick’s Whisky Advent Calendar, this time a Dalmore 15 years old. A distillery famous because of their world-renowned Consternation Collections: yet another expensive collection of whiskies.

I have to say that I like the style of the Dalmore distillery but I really dislike their approach to whisky drinkers: making good stuff expensive and watering down the average stuff… #ripoff

Anyway, let’s review it

“Excellent nose and a quite solid sherried whisky but I think it has more water than it should”

89
Dalmore 15 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The new flagship expression from Dalmore that after fifteen years achieve the perfect balance on the combination of citrus orange, aromatic spices, nuttiness and dried fruits from European oak sherry casks.

But not just any sherry casks, but those that have been used to create some of the worlds most premium fortified wines - Amoroso, Apostoles and Matusalem sherries from Gonzalez - Byass, Spain.

Lovely Dalmore Single Malt whisky. If you like it, you should give a try to some of the Macallan whiskies like this 10 years old Sherry Oak.

This dram has a tawny-like color.

Nose (90): more than average. honey, citrus, tobacco, vanilla, spices, cinnamon, wood, flowers, nuts.

Palate (89): powerful, oily. honey, citrus, nuts, spices, vanilla, wood, cinnamon, cocoa.

Finish (89): longer than average. honey, cocoa, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Dalmore 15 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with 89 points over 100.

It is a quite good whisky but I have the feeling that this was truly fantastic and it was watered down to make the expensive stuff looks better…

Flaviar: Whisky Samples At Your Door

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie , Glengoyne , Old Pulteney , Dalmore , Glen Garioch

You know that much, if not all, of the whisky that I drink for A Wardrobe of Whisky comes from samples. You can’t imagine how hard is to get decent whiskies here in the south of Spain, well.. you can easily get great whiskies like Chivas Regal 12 years old or the all-mighty Johnnie Walker Black Label ( Oh God, Take my live! ). So as you can see most of my experience comes from samples which it is a great way of tasting new malts for a fraction of the price.

It is always good news to welcome a new samples bottler, Flaviar, on the arena. But what Flaviar does different from the rest of players?

flaviar-tasting-pack

Flaviar features a monthly subscription service where you get a pack of five samples with enough whisky for three persons to taste it. The idea of Flaviar is to be an exploration tool, helping beginners in discovering the world of spirits, while for the more experienced spirits lovers it’s a great way of discovering new drinks and keeping their spirit shelves updated without wrong purchases. If I had had such chance when I started drinking whisky… I have now a full wardrobe full of vile whiskies that I don’t dare drink ( yes, you know who am I talking about! )

As well as the pack of five 5ml samples you get also some “experts” insights as well as tasting instructions ( quite useful really for newcomers ) and fun trivia games. One thing quite fun is the fact that each pack is theme like “Schnaps of the Alps”, “There were pirates” or “Whisky’s Big in Japan” and they came in a precious little black box.
Each of the samples is labelled with the spirit inside and its strength ( note to Flaviar: Blind tastings are usually more fun, just an idea ).

My pack was called “Highlanders: There can be only one” and features five Highlands whiskies, some of them tasted some years ago in this blog. So let’s taste the whisky.

Would you pay £150 for a Glendronach 15 years old?

By Miguel in Arran , Bowmore , Benriach , Glendronach , Dalmore , Glenturret

What the hell! July already?! Well, I was supposed to write about this WTS 2013-03 session almost two months ago, but as the poet says there is no harm on delaying if the whisky is good.

IMG_3882

As usual, Whisky Tasting Sessions is a set of six whiskies that Jean Marie Putz chooses himself and tasted blindly by us. Just a number on each sample so you can identify it and most of the times they are not sorted in any proper way. But as always, it is a pleasure to test my senses against them.

This session has a great dram that I really love and it has been really fun to discover what it was. Usually between strange independent bottlings of bizarre distilleries there is a jewel or two, like a 38 years old Bunnahabhain that really surprise you. Such is the case…

This post continue from TWE Whisky Show [Part 3]

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2012 took place at October 6th and 7th and although it has been a great experience it has been a short one. With over 450 whiskies to taste and just barely six hours ahead it was impossible to taste them all.

What I couldn’t taste

This post is just a set of photos of what I couldn’t taste. Sorry, people… I can write about this because I get sad… so great stuff that I had to skip… *sniff*

I visited Compass Box stand for saying hi to Chris and I take a few photos with the people on the show.

Dalmore 14 years old 1996 Master of Malt

By Miguel in Tasting , Dalmore

“So well packed nose, so good taste. This whisky should be more expensive! You are making the other look worse.”

91
Dalmore 14 year 1996 Master of Malt
Distilled on the 29th October 1996 and bottled on the 17th June 2011, this is a classic cask strength Dalmore. It was aged in a single refill hogshead for 14 years, and the result is loads of character, malt and spice...

This dram has a white wine-like color.

Nose (92): strong. malt, honey, peaches, oranges, vanilla, wood, floral. Very dense nose. You can't imagine how good it does smell.

Palate (90): light, smooth. malt, floral, spices, wood, oranges, peaches, earthy.

Finish (90): very long. floral, orange zest, honey.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Dalmore 14 year 1996 Master of Malt with 91 points over 100.

The Dalmore 12 years old Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Dalmore
88
Dalmore 12 year
A recent batch of Dalmore 12, along with a smart packaging revamp. This new 12 year old is very impressive even by Dalmore's high standards.

This dram has a white-like color.

Nose (88): inexistent. sweet, honey, floral, citrus, a little wood, tobacco. First nosing data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Palate (88): . sweet, floral, oranges, honey, barley, a little wood. Bouquet data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Finish (88): no finish. floral, citrus, a little honey, wood, oranges. Finish length is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Dalmore 12 year with 88 points over 100.
