Tasting of Bunnahabhain 21 years old Jubilee Malt II

By Miguel in Tasting , Bunnahabhain

“Marvelous! The first batch of this Bunnahabhain was a sherry monster, this one although matured also in a sherry cask is a different and even better whisky. I love it!”

91
Bunnahabhain 21 Year Old Jubilee Malt II Sherry Cask
After selling out the first batch in a matter of hours, here it is the second batch of Bunnahabhain Jubilee Malt from The Whisky Barrel.

This Bunnahabhain has been matured in a single fresh sherry butt cask #3.

To commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee (1952-2012) TheWhiskyBarrel.com present our second release of Jubilee Malt, this time Extra Regal.

Superb whisky! Really don't miss it even if you are republican!

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. some honey, peat, peaches, vanilla, tobacco, citrus. Lovely honey aroma! The way Bunnahabhain does! I like it.

Palate (92): smooth, powerful, oily. honey, peat, fruits, peaches, spices, pepper, vanilla, citrus. Powerfully awesome!

Finish (91): longer than average. wood, honey, pepper.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Bunnahabhain 21 Year Old Jubilee Malt II Sherry Cask with 91 points over 100.

Thanks to The Whisky Barrel for this great sample.

Woodford Reserve Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Woodford Reserve

“More fruity that the rest of bourbon I have had, this Woodford Reserve has a style more similar to rye whiskies.”

85
Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon
Woodford Reserve is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey with a twist.

The mashbill for Woodford Reserve features a high percentage of rye: 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malt.

Unusual also for being triple distilled and having the lowest proof upon entering the barrel where it matures for at least six years.

A must have Kentucky bourbon. Makes a wonderful Old-Fashioned cocktail!

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (84): average. corn, fruits, mango, floral, honey, wood. Not like a typical bourbon at all. Very fruity.

Palate (86): powerful, oily. corn, floral, honey, spices, pepper, cinnamon, wood.

Finish (86): longer than average. corn, honey, floral, pepper.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon with 85 points over 100.

The Macallan 10 years old Sherry Oak Cask Strength Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , The Macallan

“Most mindblowing awesomeness! And to think that I bought two of this Macallan for €50 just a few years ago... best buy ever!”

92
Macallan 10 year Sherry Oak Cask Strength
The Macallan Sherry Oak is exclusively matured in selected sherry oak casks from Jerez, Spain instead of using different kind of casks as the Fine Oak range does.

This expression is matured for 10 years and then bottled at original cask strength without chill filtration or the addition of water. The result is a particularly rich Single Malt, best enjoyed with a splash of water to release the complex aromas and sumptuous flavours.

Even if the prices on the Internet are high this Macallan is worth every penny you pay for it.

This dram has a old oak-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. nuts, honey, citrus, wood, cinnamon. Marvelous!

Palate (92): powerful, oily. nuts, honey, wood, citrus, cocoa, tobacco. The epitome of sherry aged drams. I love this profile.

Finish (92): longer than average. nuts, honey, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Macallan 10 year Sherry Oak Cask Strength with 92 points over 100.

“Old Bourbon with lots of spices around.”

88
William Larue Weller 12 Year Old
A 75cl bottle of Buffalo Trace's stunning bourbon William Larue Weller, named after the man famed for being the first to create "whetted bourbon", in which the spicy rye grain is substituted for wheat in the mash bill.

The result is a smooth, supple little sippin' whiskey.

If you like this bourbon, you really must try the high strength William Larue Weller

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (90): more than average. corn, spices, pepper, a little cinnamon, old, wood, honey, floral.

Palate (88): powerful, oily. corn, honey, pepper, wood, old, floral, cloves.

The Cigar Malt 15 years old Chieftain's Choice Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Ian Macleod

“I am not a smoker... this is a nice whisky but nothing really huge or special.”

88
The Cigar Malt 15 year Chieftain's Choice
This Cigar Malt was specially selected by a panel in Glasgow.

They chose from a shortlist of ten incredible casks, selecting this as the best whisky which could both hold its own as a malt in its own right, and as a perfect accompaniment for a cigar.

This was aged in a sherry butt number 3661, from an unnamed Speyside distillery. The result is rich plummy and is excellent when paired with a medium to full-bodied cigar.

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (87): more than average. honey, dust, wood, flowers, pepper, vanilla.

Palate (88): powerful, oily. honey, toffee, floral, spices, wood, pepper, apples, malt, vanilla.

Finish (88): longer than average. honey, floral, citrus, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this The Cigar Malt 15 year Chieftain's Choice with 88 points over 100.

Imperial 13 year 1997 NC2
Distilled in 1997, this 13 year old Imperial was bottled by Duncan Taylor in 2010 for their range of non chillfiltered, non caramel coloured single malts (NC2).

Palate (89): smooth, powerful, oily. honey, spices, wood, vanilla, pepper, floral, citrus.

Inishowen Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Cooley

“Light dram with a lovely licorice touch.”

86
Inishowen
A peaty blended Irish whiskey from Cooley, the last independent owned Irish distillery before it was bought by Beam.

Inishowen offers a zesty, rich, smoky flavour.

Highly commended by critics, including Jim Murray who gave a previous batch 93 points.

If you like this blended whiskey, you should try the Connemara single malt, peated whiskey with an Irish touch.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Palate (88): . honey, floral, cocoa, spices, licorice, vanilla. light but lovely sweet with a touch of licorice

Finish (86): average. honey, licorice, vanilla.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Inishowen with 86 points over 100.

Amrut Fusion Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Amrut

“Woo! Serious stuff! It is so much better that the last I tried. Scots be scared!”

92
Amrut Fusion
This high-strength Amrut Fusion gets its name from the fact that it uses two barleys: Indian and Scottish - with the latter being peated for good measure.

A really excellent mouthfeel and palate combining oak, smoke, dark fruit, mocha and high-cocoa dark chocolate. Delicious stuff.

This Amrut was the 3rd best whisky in the world in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. Definitively something not to miss!

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (92): strong. honey, peat, fruits, a little nuts, spices, vanilla, raisins, cocoa. Better nose than the standard Amrut. It is more complex and darker, like a Tim Burton film.

Palate (93): smooth, powerful, oily. honey, peat, fruits, nuts, raisins, vanilla, wood, citrus.

Finish (92): longer than average. honey, wood, spices, nuts.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut Fusion with 92 points over 100.

Amrut Indian Single Malt Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Amrut

“Superb Indian whisky with lots of tropical fruit notes on nose and spices on the palate. Love it.”

91
Amrut 46% Single Malt
The new Amrut Indian Single Malt has been beefed up to 46% and we can't wait to try it.

The peated cask-strength stuff is excellent and this should be a significant improvement on the old 40% bottling.

And in fact it is, just a bit less complex than Amrut Fusion this is a great whisky coming from the Himalaya lands.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. honey, fruits, pears, mango, vanilla, citrus, cocoa.

Palate (91): smooth, powerful. honey, smoke, wood, spices, pears, vanilla, licorice.

Finish (90): average. honey, spices, melon, vanilla.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Amrut 46% Single Malt with 91 points over 100.
