Morrison Bowmore's new whiskies: Auchentoshan, Glen Garioch and Bowmore

It is almost a month since Halloween, where I got the scariest of the surprises… my parcel with Bowmore Devil’s Cask sample got lost and I never got it… don’t cry yet! This is a happy end story :)

So almost a month later a replacement appeared on my door and here I am, ready to taste three fantastic whiskies from Morrison Bowmore Distillers: An lowlander, a Highlander and an Islay beauty.

Auchentoshan Three Wood Review

I am back with daily tasting notes for the malts that I enjoy most. So let’s begin with a great Lowlands Single Malt Whisky from Auchentoshan distillery.

Auchentoshan Three Wood Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
70cl / 43% / Distillery Bottling - The ever-popular Auchentoshan Three Wood is matured initially in bourbon casks before being finished in Oloroso or Pedro Ximenez casks for an extra layer of rich, sweet fruitiness.

This dram has a tawny-like color.

Nose (90): more than average. honey, nuts, fruits, vanilla, baked apples, cocoa, ripe pears, cinnamon, cloves.

Palate (91): powerful, oily. honey, sherry, nuts, spices, citrus, cinnamon, cocoa, fruits.

Finish (90): longer than average. honey, citrus, nuts.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Auchentoshan Three Wood Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with 90 points over 100.

Whisky Tasting Session 2013-02

Oh my! Time goes so fast. We are already in April! So here are the results for this second session of Whisky Distilleries Tasting.

As usual Jean-Marie Putz of Whisky-distilleries.info proposed six unnamed samples on a stunning box like previous tastings.

As I explained a blind tasting is a quite interesting experience because tasting whiskies in this way you really pay more attention to the whisky and less to the bottle. I am enjoying so much this kind of tastings that I am starting doing myself them with my samples, keeps your eyes peeled for more info about this soon.

Master of Malt Single Cask: Whiskies dram-arathon!

As I was writing you yesterday, whisky fairy knocked my door with a box ( well, two in fact ) full of whisky samples of Master of Malt’s Single Cask Whiskies.

Apart of three very interesting That Boutique-y whiskies, the box had eleven samples of the new bottling, that if you know them are stunning most of times… just thinking of this Bowmore, this Glenturret or … ejem… well… to the point, about these eleven single cask whiskies.

Kids! Don’t do this at home! Eleven drams, one evening. Let’s find the best one.

Auchentoshan 1999 Bourdeaux Cask Tasting note

“Nice nose in this interesting Auchentoshan whisky with a taste that remind me of sweet sherry cask matured whiskies.”

This casks strength, bordeaux cask matured Auchentoshan whisky was released to celebrate Bastille Day and the auld alliance between Scotland and France.

The open grain of French Oak helps develop a full oaky character in this cask strength, non chill-filtered release.

The result is pleasantly sharp, countering the sweet Auchentoshan style.

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (89): more than average. honey, fruits, cherry, citrus, custard, spices, vanilla.

Palate (87): smooth, powerful, oily. honey, nuts, wood, cocoa, spices, fruits, citrus, floral. Great at first then something strange happens.

Finish (85): average. wood, nuts, spices, sweet.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Auchentoshan 1999 Bourdeaux Cask with 87 points over 100.

Tasting of Auchentoshan 12 years old 1998 Fino Sherry Cask

“Sweet Auchentoshan whisky with the slightest notes of nuts. Nice one!”

A 12 year old from Auchentoshan, this was aged in European oak Fino sherry barrels before bottling 2010.

The results are creamy and very fruity, and at cask strength there's a lot going on.

A great malty character with the sweetest touch of nuts.

If you like this whisky you should give a try to AnCnoc 16 years old

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (90): more than average. honey, barley, citrus, vanilla, floral.

Palate (89): smooth, powerful, oily. honey, spices, nuts, floral, citrus, vanilla, barley.

Finish (90): longer than average. honey, vanilla, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Auchentoshan 12 year 1998 Fino Sherry Cask with 90 points over 100.

Tasting of Auchentoshan 16 years old Cadenhead's Duthies

A 16 year old Auchentoshan bottled by WM Cadenhead for the new range, Duthies.

Duthies consists of six whiskies from a range of distilleries, none of which are chill-filtered, nor do they have added caramel coloring.

This Auchentoshan single malt scotch whisky features a very interesting malt and floral profile.

This dram has a fino-like color.

Nose (89): more than average. honey, malt, floral, citrus, vanilla. Quite good.

Palate (88): smooth, oily. honey, floral, malt, citrus, vanilla, pepper. It lacks of power. Maybe 48% would have been better.

Finish (89): average. honey, floral, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Auchentoshan 16 year Duthies with 89 points over 100.

Review of Auchentoshan 35 years old 1975 Bourbon Cask Matured

A very limited release edition Auchentoshan 1975.

This has been aged for thirty-five years in bourbon casks before bottling. Just 500 bottles of this have been released, and the whisky is described as having a butterscotch and rum& raisin toffee character.

Marvelous candies and floral aromas in this Lowlands single malt whisky.

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (91): average. candies, floral, vanilla, citrus, cinnamon, wood.

Palate (90): smooth, powerful, oily. candies, spices, vanilla, floral, citrus, cinnamon, wood.

Finish (90): longer than average. wood, sweet, cinnamon, floral.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Auchentoshan 35 Year Old 1975 - Bourbon Cask Matured with 90 points over 100.

A more recent release from the Auchentoshan distillery, replacing the previous staple 10 year old, this 12 year old bottling exhibits the new, slightly Imperial aesthetics Auchentoshan have rebranded themselves with.

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (90): more than average. sweet, fruity, peaches, spices, a little floral.

Palate (88): light, smooth, dry. sweet, peaches, wood, spices, floral.

Finish (85): average. honey, floral, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Auchentoshan 12 year with 88 points over 100.

A single cask from the Lowland distillery Auchentoshan, known for its classic style and orchard fruit character. This was bottled as part of the Vintage Malt Whisky Company's Coopers Choice range.

This dram has a white wine-like color.

Nose (81): strong. floral, a littlehoney, a littlevanilla, a bit cinnamon.

Palate (90): light, powerful. floral, wood, honey, vanilla, pepper.

Finish (84): longer than average. floral, honey, wood.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Auchentoshan 1991 Coopers Choice with 85 points over 100.
