Three 21 years old whiskies for the End of the World

By Miguel in Tasting , The Balvenie , Glen Garioch , Glencadam

What better way of celebrating that the Mayans were wrong that with three fantastic 21 years old whiskies tasted the very same December, 21st.

Yep, I am slow blogging… but real life is so demanding.

A Balvenie, a Glencadam, a Glen Garioch and a great surprise.

I bought this surprise dram from Master of Malt and stored it on the samples’ box… I checked the price of the full bottle and it was a bit more expensive of what my budget allowed so I decided to skip it. A real mistake after I have tasted it.

Balvenie 21 years old Portwood

“Not bad but Balvenie can do a much better whisky than this Portwood”

90
Balvenie 21 year Portwood
An additional period of maturation in 30 year-old Port pipes has given this aged Balvenie an extra level of depth and concentration of flavour, adding potent fruit and smoke notes to the silky-smooth full-bodied palate. Rich, indulgent, after-dinner Speyside at it's best.

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. honey, malt, fruity, citrus, spices.

Palate (89): smooth, oily. honey, spices, floral, citrus, cake.

Finish (89): average. honey, spices, cinnamon, ginger.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Balvenie 21 year Portwood with 90 points over 100.

The Lost Distilleries Blend

This dram has a mahogany-like color.

Nose (92): more than average. candies, spices, vanilla, cinnamon, honey. Tasty old stuff here. Smells like a marvelous old rum

Palate (91): powerful, oily. honey, molasses, spices, cinnamon, ginger, citrus, wood, pepper.

Finish (91): longer than average. honey, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this The Lost Distilleries Blend with 91 points over 100.

Miguel says…

This Lost Distilleries blend, you can buy the a bottle of the second batch from them now, is a blended whisky created by Master of Malt using only very old malt and grain whiskies from lost distilleries. Marketing buzz? Nah, don’t make the same mistake I did…

It is a real pity for the other three that this great dram eclipses them. But both Glen Garioch and Balvenie are very nice whiskies.

Just curious, do you have a whisky budget? How much have you spent on a whisky bottle? I find myself very hard to self-justify spending more than £100 on a whisky bottle.
