Old Ballantruan Whiskies Review

By Miguel in Tasting , Tomintoul

I tasted these two single malt whiskies when I visited The Whisky Show 2013. If you read this blog frequently ( daily you should! ) you will know that I love peated whiskies. I love them so much that when building the list of 10 Whiskies to drink for Christmas many of them were peated. So when I had the chance of tasting these two I didn’t miss it.

Old Ballantruan is made by Tomintoul using heavily peated malt with a phenol content of 55ppm ( much like Ardbeg 10yo ).

Tomintoul Tweet Tasting #Tom1981

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Tomintoul

Yesterday, I got invited to a fantastic Tweet Tasting organized by Tomintoul and directed by Robert Fleming, master distiller for Tomintoul.

The tasting was to introduce their 21 years old whisky and a new single cask expression released recently: 1981. As I have tasted so little of this distillery I thought it was a fantastic chance of increasing my knowledge on the gentle single malt whisky. So two days ago I received a small parcel with no external annotations and voila!

So I just obeyed the instructions and “YOU MUST NOT RESIST THE URGE TO DRINK THEM”… well, ok, the tasting was supposed to be May, 29 but… what the hell! :) An order is an order :)

Tomintoul 10 years old Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Recommended , Tomintoul

“ A really smooth interesting Speyside single malt. This whisky has a memorable nose with great floral notes. ”

92
Tomintoul 10 year
Tomintoul distillery was built in the 1960's in the heart of the famous Speyside-Glenlivet whisky making region.

This Speyside distillery takes fresh water from the Ballantruan spring. This gentle dram is soft, smooth and malty with a biscuity sweetness followed by a long, elegant finish.

A great value single malt that won't dissapoint you.

This dram has a white-like color.

Nose (96): inexistent. sweet, honey, tobacco, wood, floral, lavender, some apples and pears. First nosing data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Palate (92): . sweet, honey, floral, pepper, wood, spices, toffee, apples. Bouquet data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Finish (88): no finish. honey, citrus, floral, spices, a little wood. Finish length is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Tomintoul 10 year with 92 points over 100.
