Whisky Tasting Session 2012-08

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Caol Ila , Bunnahabhain , Bowmore , Tomatin , Glen Keith , Longmorn

This Whisky Tasting Session was the last event of the 2012.

In case you missed previous tasting sessions, WTS are a blind tasting of six whiskies chosen by Jean Marie of Whisky-distilleries.info. Our task consists on tasting them, rating and find the right price range of the bottle.

I have been a bit stressed so I decided to do the tasting in a short break that I had and send Jean Marie the results as soon as possible. I have learn two things:
a) Don’t taste on a rush.
b) Don’t trust my skills to guess age of a dram.

Jean Marie placed on this tasting some awesome and incredible bottles some of them over 30 years old. So now that I know what I was tasting I will take a bit of time to retaste them and check if the score or the tasting note departs for the previous blind tasting.
It would be a huge dissapointment if they do, as I do my best not to score the distillery, the color, the price or the bottle but the whisky for itself. I will keep you updated.

The tasting was interesting but nothing close to sensational, but after filling the tasting notes I realized that I have tasted some very special whiskies: a 38 years old Bunnahabhain, a 35 years old Bunnahabhain and a more than 30 years old Caol Ila.

Almost finishing the year and we are already on the 7th tasting session.

Again six nameless whiskies presented in a stunning box, Jean Marie know how to do the job really.
Pretty bizarre distilleries on this set, but that’s the main reason I joined this tasting sessions; the chance of tasting new different stuff.

Review of Mosstowie 31 years old 1979 Signatory Cask Strength Collection

By Miguel in Tasting , Glen Keith

“Scrumptious floral whisky. Mourn with me this tragic loss”

89
Mosstowie 31 year 1979 Cask Strength Collection
A 31 year old Speysider, this was distilled at Miltonduff on the 18th May 1979, it was aged for 31 years in a single hogshead, before bottling by Signatory on the 24th November 2010. A release of 188 bottles.

Mosstowie is whisky distilled at Miltonduff from malted barley, but in column stills! Which by today standards would rule it out as single malt scotch whisky.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (86): average. floral, honey, candies, nutmeg, vanilla. Smells like PEZ candies. Interesting.

Palate (91): smooth, dry. floral, honey, citrus, spices, vanilla, wood.

Finish (90): longer than average. honey, floral, wood, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Mosstowie 31 year 1979 Cask Strength Collection with 89 points over 100.

“Uaagh! Added to my list of whisky I should avoid

79
Glenisla 1977 / 28 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
A Signatory bottling of Glenisla, an experimental malt whisky distilled at Glen Keith using lightly peated malt and distilled heavily peated water. Slightly mad and very rare.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (79): more than average. honey, many floral, pepperoni . Very floral and then really strange. I swear it smells of saucisson. Unpleasant.

Palate (79): smooth, powerful. floral, spices, wood, pepper, pepperoni.

Finish (80): longer than average. floral, plums, dried apricots, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenisla 1977 / 28 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky with 79 points over 100.
