In 1903 the Chartusean monks were expelled from France and their property seized by the French government, including their distillery. Having fled to Spain, it was no more than a year until they had acquired a new distillery in Tarragone and started production of their Chartreuse liqueur again. The monks were allowed back into France and resumed production there in 1930. However, Tarragone distillery kept running until 1989.
